Can Birth Injuries Be Cured?

a mother comforting her crying babyBirth injuries can be devastating. In light of such a traumatic experience, parents may wonder if there is any cure available for their children.

Below, our Cleveland medical malpractice attorneys discuss which birth injuries can be cured, and which cannot.

Which Birth Injuries Are Permanent?

Certain birth injuries cannot be cured. Often, the birth injuries that cannot be cured are the ones that involve brain damage. Birth injuries affecting the brain are often caused by oxygen deprivation during the labor and delivery process, and such damage can be difficult or impossible to reverse.

Permanent birth injuries that have no cure include:

  • Cerebral palsy

  • Klumpke’s palsy

  • Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy

  • Severe cases of Erb’s palsy or shoulder dystocia

Which Birth Injuries Are Treatable?

Certain birth injuries, on the other hand, may resolve on their own or with proper treatment. Treatable or curable birth injuries are often those that involve physical damage rather than brain damage.

Examples of treatable or curable birth injuries include:

  • Broken bones, bruises, or lacerations

  • Mild cases of Erb’s palsy or shoulder dystocia

  • Caput succedaneum

  • Cephalohematoma

There are several different treatment options for birth injuries. The main treatments include surgery, physical therapy, and/or medications. The treatment your child receives will depend on the type and severity of their birth injury.

Such treatments do not come cheap. Often, children with birth injuries will require long-term care, which can add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills for a family. You should not have to pay these costs out of your own pocket when a negligent healthcare professional is responsible.

If your child suffered a birth injury, our Cleveland medical malpractice attorneys have the experience and resources necessary to protect your rights against large hospitals and insurance companies.
